Frequently Asked
Questions
- Why is
our office
named Boojum Obstetrics & Gynecology?
- The
first time Dr. Kells laid his eyes on a Boojum tree,
he
fell in love.
He likes the character that each tree displays and that it
flourishes in the harsh desert environment. The Boojum tree
(pictured on the left) is
native to the deserts of Baja, California and Sonora, Mexico.
It
can be found locally at the Desert Botanical Garden and the Boyce
Thompson Arboretum. It resembles a giant upside down turnip,
with
a tall tapering trunk, green-white bark, and short thin horizontal
branches. The wood is soft and spongy and retains water
It
is often hollow and provides a home for honeybees. The tree
is
leafless during much of the year but leaves appear when the temperature
cools down. It also has orange-red flowers that blossom which
look similar to its cousin the ocotillo. It can attain
heights of
66 feet but will bend gracefully as it cannot support itself.
